I would say that musicals are a guilty pleasure but in all honestly I absolutely LOVE musicals! Yes they are cheesy and they can make no sense what-so-ever sometimes, but there is something special about a great musicals that you can't get their songs out of your head.
Ever since I was a kid musicals always have made me extremely happy. The Sound of Music was on at all hours of the night in the Abaud household. To this day I can sing every song by heart and even attempt to do the dances. Now when I watch it I can't help admiring the Von Trapp children's clothing in particular the oldest daughter, Liesl wardrobe.

I can go on for days writing about the Sound of Music, but I'll stop right there.
As I got older it was hard to go through my teen angst phase and like musicals at the same time. However, I couldn't help get a funny feeling of excitement during the closing scenes of Sister Act 2 when the class goes to the choir competition and break out into the most ridiculous performance. It was something inside of me that I loved, but could not admit it.
There are a few musicals that I wasn't initially too fond of such as Rocky Horror Picture Show or Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I had watched them in passing in middle school with my friends in hopes of catching clips of the "dirty" parts. By chance the songs from those movies came back into my life which and prompted me to give those films another chance. Once I understood the music I was a fan of the movie.
Recently one of my roommates asked me why do gays guys (and myself) like Barbara Streisand so much. I had to think about this one for a sec. So many reasons, Jewess, hilarious, beautiful in her own right, talented. If you need any proof of this, please watch Funny Girl. This film is in my top 5 films of all time. Babs plays Fannie Brice, a young singer that comes up from the Lower East Side of NY to make it big. In the meantime she meets her first hubby, Nick Arnstein, who turns out be a gambling loser.

Now I am 26 and with the help of Netflix: Watch Instantly, I have been able to discover so many more musicals. I have an appreciation for a good song that is placed so perfectly to help narrate a story.
